I've been gradually getting hooked on social bookmarking. I love the fact that I can store my bookmarks on the web and therefore access them anywhere. I also like the use of tags although I don't think I've developed the "best" system of tagging yet - at least in terms of later remembering what I saved something under!
I'm just starting on the social side of it in terms of sharing and looking at other people's favorites. I do like the fact that you can "piggyback" on the work someone else has done to find a site they think worthy of saving even though we may not all respond to the same site in the same way.
As with the other tools, I'm thinking of how I might use social bookmarking to help my students learn.

While I try to think of a way social bookmarking could benefit my students, it may never really be put in play for me. I do know that I like having access to my bookmarks and have already shared the site with colleagues. I plan to set up a day when I intro some of these tools to the staff. We're always looking for a short lesson on our early release days.
ReplyDeleteEven if my students don't use it, it will free up time for me and colleagues which can be better spent planning for our lessons and helping students.
I love social book marking also! At first I wasn't too consistent with the tagging, but over the years I have learned what works for me and actually went back in and changed the tags. (Yes, it took time, but much easier to find things.) I like how it shows the tags of others for the same site.
ReplyDeleteAs for class activities - I can think of a few. You could put the resources you want the students to use on the site. So they are going on the web for resources, but you have authenticated them. As students become more skilled at using the web, they could post sites. You, as a class activity, could pull it up and look at the sites. Great opportunity to talk about web evaluation (unbiased, current, domain names, etc)
